If you’ve ever dreamed of Mickey Mouse battling Elsa in a sparkly card showdown, Disney Lorcana is your new obsession. It’s like Pokémon meets storybook chaos—and I mean that in the best way possible. But before you grab your cards and start yelling “Let It Go!” at your friends, here’s how the game actually works (because trust me, you’ll want to know the rules before you get destroyed by someone’s Donald Duck combo).
You’ll need a 60-card deck—and no, you can’t just grab random cards that “look cool.” Each deck has cards that come in six magical “inks”: Amber, Amethyst, Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire, and Steel.
Think of them like your Hogwarts houses, but shinier and way more confusing the first time you play.
Forget about knocking out Pokémon or draining life points. In Lorcana, your goal is to reach 20 lore points before your opponent does.
Lore is basically the game’s version of victory points—every time your characters “quest,” they earn you some lore.
First one to 20 wins. Unless your opponent wipes your board before you get there (which will happen more often than you’d like).
Each turn has a few steps, but here’s the short version:
Every card has its own stats—strength, willpower, and lore value.
You’ll find three main types of cards:
Characters: The stars of the show (Mulan, Simba, you name it).
Actions: Spells or effects that cause trouble (like “Fire the Cannons!”).
Items: Stuff that just sits there being useful—like Aladdin’s lamp or a frying pan.
My first few games were disasters. I tried playing all my shiny cards at once and ran out of ink by turn four. Don’t do that.
Instead:
Playing Disney Lorcana feels like mixing magic, strategy, and chaos with a sprinkle of nostalgia. You’ll lose, you’ll win, and you’ll probably argue about rules at least once—but that’s the fun of it.
So grab your cards, invite some friends, and remember: even if you lose, at least you can say you got beaten by Stitch and not some random dragon.
